Currently waiting while getting a tire with a slow leak looked at. It may be 90F out, but outside is where the cars are. Cars such as this Legacy 3.6R.

Kinja'd!!!

and this WRX. Much better than a stuffy waiting room.

I wonder if a Freestyle/Taurus X would take a Ecoboost SHO drivetrain...

Ford Freestyle (not the Taurus X with the three bar chrome grille).

The Taurus X was an immensely better vehicle; the 3.5 V6 and 6-speed auto were significantly better than the old 3.0 V6 and CVT combo. That CVT was truly garbage.

I saw it as a Hyundai Sonata at first glance. Man, every car is starting to look the same

The Legacy 3.6R would be a good car if the 3.6 and 5AT combination wasn’t awful. So much throttle lag and if the transmission is between gears while you are decelerating and you apply throttle it will sit there and do nothing for a few seconds before deciding what gear it wants and then applying the throttle all at once. Not confidence inspiring. Does go pretty good though.

The Flex has the 3.5 EcoBoost, and is on the same platform as the Taurus X / Freestyle, so, maybe?

I do that occasionally, but there are much more new Legacys around here than Sonatas.

The one in front of me has the CVT, but I’ve driven the 5EAT version in an Outback a bunch.

I never really had an issue with throttle lag, but the 5EAT does tend to get confused more easily than the 4EAT. It does jolt pretty violently if you don’t come to a complete stop, which can be annoying.

I didn’t even realize that the CVT is capable of handling the torque of the 3.6. Especially considering the 5MT couldn’t handle the 3.0.

Like the look of the new Legacy, but man, screw that drivetrain. Maybe I can swap my 2005 guts into it.

It’s the High Torque CVT, same as found in the newer Forester XT, WRX, and JDM Levorg 2.0GT and Legacy 2.0DIT. Different than the CVT in the rest of their non-turbo lineup.

theres no way its on the same platform as the freestyle. the flex is HUGE. Like Trumps ego huge. Its actually longer than the Explorer.

I could be wrong but i might not be too. I dunno

Interesting. My Dad and I pulled the Outback 3.6R out of the running to replace my Moms car due to the 5EAT. I guess it could go back into the running. My Dad and I wouldn’t be happy with the CVT but my Mom really wouldn’t care.

I agree 100x. I never purchased a 3.6 because the throttle lag was so terrible (has always been a Subaru issue). Plus the gas mileage and lame power out of a large engine left me wanting.

The issue for us isn’t so much the throttle lag, that you can work around. The big issue is when you catch it between gears. There are times when you accelerate to turn through a gap in traffic or accelerate from a light and it just won’t do anything for a second or two while it figures out what gear it needs to be in.

I got that a bit wrong. The Freestyle is on the D3 platform, same as the Taurus. The Flex is on the D4 platform, same as the Explorer.

The D3 and D4 are pretty closely related though, and my best guess is that hard points such as engine and transmission mounts are the same.

My experience is with the standard CVT in a 2.5i Forester, but I don’t find it too bad. It’s not as snappy right off the line as my 4EAT Forester (which I personally miss), but it’s quicker to accelerate once it’s moving (makes passing a lot better). The fuel economy is fantastic, too.

unrelated, but do you happen to have any 486 boards?

Unfortunately not. The only spare board I have right now is a Gateway 2000 Socket 7 board I’m keeping for a spare.

Serial mouse, no. I might have a spare floppy drive (3.5"?) I’ll check tonight.
